The Rohingya crisis, which began with violence and displacement in Myanmar, has now entered its eighth year. In 2017-2018, the Tatmadaw (Myanmar’s military) committed acts of violence against the Rohingya Muslim population, causing many to flee. Millions of Rohingya sought refuge in Bangladesh and India to escape the persecution.
The United Nations has acknowledged the Rohingya as the most persecuted community worldwide. Bangladesh is currently hosting approximately 1.3 million Rohingya refugees, who are living in various refugee camps. The recent commemoration of the eighth anniversary saw Rohingya refugees demanding their safe return to their homes in Rakhine State. The ongoing conference is addressing the rights and justice for the Rohingya people.
Since November 2023, it is estimated that 1.5 million Rohingya have entered Bangladesh. As a result, the number of Rohingya seeking asylum in Bangladesh has reached at least 1.324 million. Additionally, there are reports of 25,000 to 30,000 Rohingya trying to cross the border into Bangladesh. The refugee camps are also seeing about 30,000 births annually.
