Bangladesh is currently hosting a large population of Rohingya refugees. The country’s efforts to provide sanctuary to nearly a million Rohingya have been commended internationally. In 2017, a significant influx of Rohingya refugees began arriving from Myanmar, fleeing violence. Continued conflict in the Rakhine state has led to a further increase in the refugee population in Bangladesh. The international community, in response, is providing substantial support to Bangladesh. The Netherlands has announced it will provide over 500,000 Euros in financial assistance. This aid will be channeled through the UNHCR to provide safety and essential humanitarian aid. The UN has also visited refugee camps and provided support. Additionally, some Rohingya have sought refuge in India, where the situation of the refugees has drawn some criticism from international organizations. The Rohingya are widely recognized as a heavily persecuted minority group.
