Istanbul is in turmoil following the publication of a cartoon in LeMan magazine, which authorities claim insults the Prophet Muhammad. Protests led to clashes with police, who used rubber bullets and tear gas. The chief prosecutor ordered the arrest of four LeMan editors, including cartoonist Dogan Pehlevan. The contentious cartoon shows two figures with beards and wings shaking hands amidst falling missiles. While the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Tuncay Akgun, stated the cartoon was misinterpreted, the Turkish government condemned the image. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed the arrests and Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc stated that disrespect towards religious beliefs is unacceptable. LeMan defended the cartoon, stating its intent was not to offend but to highlight the suffering of a Muslim man. LeMan, a satirical magazine, has a history of generating controversy, including showing support for Charlie Hebdo.
