Los Angeles Braces for More Troops as Trump Sends Additional National Guard

The Department of Defence announced that President Donald Trump is sending 2,000 additional National Guard troops to Los Angeles to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and federal law enforcement. This adds to the 2,000 troops previously ordered to address the protests sparked by immigration arrests. Sean Parnell, Assistant to the Secretary of Defence for Public Affairs, announced the deployment on X. This move comes on the same day California filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of these deployments. A White House spokesperson responded to the lawsuit by criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom for focusing on political maneuvering rather than prosecuting those protesting ICE actions. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has strongly criticized the federalization of the state’s National Guard, calling it illegal and counterproductive. Bonta argues that the order abuses federal authority and violates the 10th Amendment, made without the approval of Governor Newsom and against the wishes of local law enforcement, as CNN reports. Governor Newsom has accused Trump of exploiting the situation to violate the US Constitution. The protests began after ICE agents conducted raids and arrested many undocumented immigrants.
