A shooting incident took place at a school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Wednesday morning. A gunman initiated the shooting, resulting in the deaths of two children. In addition to this, 17 other individuals sustained injuries. Following the shooting, the shooter also took their own life, according to police. The deceased children were 8 and 10 years old.
The attack occurred at the Annunciation Church, which includes a grammar school. A hospital official confirmed that 14 of the 17 injured were children, with seven in serious condition.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara reported that the suspect, believed to be approximately 20 years of age, possessed a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol. Police also indicated that the suspect did not have any significant criminal history. During a press conference, the police chief explained that the shooter approached the school near the church during Mass and began firing through the church windows with a rifle. He stated that the shots were aimed at children engaged in prayer. The suspect also fired shots at children and worshippers inside the building.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he had been notified about the “tragic shooting” and that the White House was closely monitoring the situation. Trump wrote, “The White House will keep a close watch on this horrific situation. Please join me in praying for all involved!” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was also present at the press conference with the police chief. The mayor emphasized that children should have the opportunity to play in playgrounds and attend school and church in peace, without any fear or risk of violence.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz wrote on social media that he had been briefed on the shooting event and that he was offering prayers for the children and educators impacted by the tragic violence during their first week back at school.
FBI Director Kash Patel reported that FBI agents were on-site. Patel stated on X, “We are aware of reports of a shooting at a Catholic school in Minnesota. FBI agents are on the scene, and we ask everyone to keep potential victims, civilians or law enforcement in harms way in your prayers. The FBI will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
