The New York Attorney General has introduced rules to address the impact of addictive social media feeds on children. The new regulations include measures to verify user ages. These efforts are based on the SAFE Act, a law enacted last year, which prohibits social media companies from using algorithms to deliver personalized feeds to users under 18 years of age without parental permission. As a result, platforms such as TikTok and Instagram will need to adjust their feeds to show content only from accounts that the young users actively follow.
The legislation also restricts companies from sending notifications to those under 18 during the hours of midnight to 6 a.m. The proposed rules specify methods that can be used to verify age and obtain parental consent.
