Efforts to improve relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have hit a significant roadblock, as four days of talks in Istanbul concluded without any agreement. The negotiations reportedly fell apart after disagreements over core demands, leading to the Pakistani delegation’s departure. This breakdown exacerbates existing tensions, which recently flared up due to alleged Pakistani airspace violations and subsequent Afghan responses. During the discussions, Afghanistan reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring its territory is not used for hostile purposes against Pakistan. However, Kabul also insisted on Pakistan ceasing its airspace violations and halting U.S. drone operations within Afghan territory. Pakistan’s refusal to accept these terms has intensified the diplomatic impasse. A key sticking point was Pakistan’s demand for Afghanistan to officially designate the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as a terrorist organization and to launch military action against the group. Afghanistan’s Defense Minister reportedly voiced skepticism about such designations, suggesting their political use. The failure of these talks is notable given Pakistan’s prior statements about potentially resorting to military action if dialogue failed, contrasting with Afghanistan’s emphasis on diplomatic engagement.
