Pakistan blocks Wikipedia over failure to take away blasphemous content material: Report

By India Today Web Desk: Pakistan has blocked Wikipedia providers after the platform didn’t take away “sacrilegious content,” a report mentioned. The motion comes days after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority or PTA warned of motion in case of non-compliance.

The PTA mentioned Wikipedia was approached for blocking/removing of sacrilegious contents. It’s not at the moment clear what Wikipedia is being requested to take away.

The platform neither complied by eradicating the blasphemous content material nor appeared earlier than the authorities, PTA mentioned in an announcement.

On February 1, the providers of Wikipedia have been “degraded” for 48 hours over “blasphemous content.” The platform was blocked after the expiry of the 48-hour deadline, Bloomberg reported.

“Given the intentional failure on the part of the platform to comply with the directions of PTA, the services of Wikipedia have been degraded for 48 hours with the direction to block/remove the reported contents,” PTA had mentioned in a tweet.

The restoration of the providers of Wikipedia will probably be reconsidered topic to removing of the reported illegal content material, the regulator mentioned.

Interestingly, Wikipedia has an article on ‘Censorship of Wikipedia’. It mentions {that a} related Wikipedia ban has occurred in international locations together with China, Iran, Myanmar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Venezuela.
