Pakistan: Hindu college students in Lahore’s Punjab University attacked by Islamists for celebrating Holi

On March 6, at the least 15 Hindu college students have been injured after Islamists of Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) attacked them for celebrating Holi inside Punjab University, Lahore. IJT is a radical Islamic scholar organisation.
As per experiences, round 30 college students gathered to have fun Holi. After the assault, when the victims protested towards the assault outdoors Vice Chancellor’s workplace, the college guards thrashed them.

Kashif Brohi, a University scholar who witnessed the assault, stated in a press release, “As students gathered on the lawns of the law college, the Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) activists forcibly stopped them from celebrating Holi, which led to a clash resulting in injuries to 15 Hindu students.” Reportedly, the University administration had granted permission to the Hindu college students to have fun Holi. In a video, guards have been seen distributing batons amongst them.

Videos of the incident went viral on social media. Sindh Council, the organisation that had joined Hindu college students to have fun Holi, condemned the assault. Sindh Council normal secretary Kashif Brohi was quoted by Dawn saying that the administration gave permission for the celebrations. He added the scholars who had posted invites to the occasion on social media have been additionally harassed by the IJT members.

One of the scholars who obtained injured, Khet Kumar, stated in a press release that the college guards thrashed them once they protested towards the assault outdoors the workplace of the Vice-Chancellor. He stated, “We have filed an application with the police against the IJT and the security guards involved in thrashing and torturing us, but FIR has not been registered as yet.”

On the opposite hand, IJT denied the allegations and claimed not one of the organisation’s members was concerned within the assault. IJT spokesperson Ibrahim Shahid stated, “None of the students involved in a brawl with the Hindu students belongs to the IJT.”
University spokesperson Khurram Shahzad denied that the scholars took permission to have fun Holi on the regulation faculty lawns. He stated, “There would not have been any problem had the celebrations been observed indoors.” The college administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
