A senior Polish official has publicly acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s critical intervention that reportedly halted Russia’s consideration of nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war. In an exclusive conversation with IANS from New Delhi on February 6, Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Bartoszewski detailed how Modi convinced President Putin against using tactical nukes in late 2022.
Praising India’s diplomatic footprint, Bartoszewski said, ‘India plays a positive role globally, and we value our excellent ties.’ He recounted Modi’s direct dialogue with Putin as a testament to India’s stabilizing influence.
The discussion extended to bilateral progress. Modi’s 2024 Poland visit, the first in 45 years, sealed a strategic pact. Fresh from ministry meetings, Bartoszewski outlined advances in defense, tech, security, investments, space, and EU trade deals.
India’s economic momentum drew applause: ‘Fourth largest GDP, targeting third—with 1.5 billion consumers, it’s a powerhouse market.’ Regarding India-US trade, he stressed, ‘Deals beat tariffs; reduced barriers foster growth as consumers pay the price otherwise.’
Complementing this, a key meeting between India’s Western Affairs Secretary Sibi George and Bartoszewski reviewed the partnership and 2024-2028 roadmap. As geopolitical tensions persist, such affirmations bolster India’s image as a peace broker.
