Putin’s statements come in the context of his upcoming visit to India later this year, preceded by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s preparations for the summit to discuss bilateral matters. Lavrov had previously announced the planned visit during the United Nations General Assembly in September. Putin also addressed US tariffs on Indian imports. He mentioned potential economic losses for India if it were to halt buying Russian oil. Putin expressed confidence in PM Modi’s ability to withstand external pressure, endorsing India’s strategic independence.
