As China celebrated May Day from May 1 to 5, its box office erupted with 75.8 crore yuan in earnings, per National Film Administration data released May 6. This five-day holiday period showcased the resilience and innovation propelling the country’s cinematic resurgence.

Viewership hit 20.84 million, screenings reached 2.376 million—gains of 1.41% in audiences, 10.23% in shows, and 2% in screen use over last year. These numbers highlight a sector firing on all cylinders.

Government backing is key: 2024’s ‘Film Economy Boost Year’ injects 1.2 billion yuan in subsidies, driving average tickets down to 36.3 yuan (from 39.5 yuan), an 8% cut that boosted attendance significantly.

‘Film+’ initiatives flourished, blending movies with roadshows, science education, business districts, and lifestyle perks like dining-shopping-parking combos. Emerging combos such as ‘Film + Cultural Tourism,’ ‘Film + Food,’ and ‘Film + Cultural Creatives’ unlocked novel consumption channels. The ‘film-inspired travel’ wave is transforming production sites into booming attractions.

Beyond tickets, the holidays generated over 11.5 billion yuan in linked sectors like tourism and dining. From January, the full film industry chain has surpassed 210 billion yuan in value, evolving into a robust catalyst for China’s service-led economy and societal progress.
