A cloud of uncertainty has descended upon Pakistan’s military leadership, raising significant regional security concerns. The overdue appointment of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) has left the status of Field Marshal Asim Munir, the current Army Chief, in question. Analysts are particularly worried that Munir, eager to solidify his position amidst this ambiguity, might resort to provoking a conflict with India. His history of strong anti-India rhetoric amplifies these fears. The situation is described as highly precarious, with even the Pakistani military seemingly unsure of who officially holds the top command. This lack of clear leadership creates a dangerous environment where a miscalculation or a deliberate provocation could have severe consequences. The delay in formalizing the CDF role is widely seen as a consequence of the civilian government’s limited authority to challenge the military’s agenda. However, the failure to announce the appointment by the November 29 deadline, which also marked the end of Munir’s initial term, has intensified scrutiny and apprehension about Pakistan’s internal dynamics and their regional impact.
