An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, triggering tsunami alerts across the Pacific. A 30 cm (12 inch) tsunami wave has already been observed in Hokkaido, Japan. Evacuations have been ordered in Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, and portions of Japan. Tsunami warnings are in effect for Alaska, Hawaii, and New Zealand, while a watch is active for Guam and Micronesia. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, warning of the potential for further, more significant waves.
