Sri Lanka Navy Arrests Tamil Nadu Fishermen for Border Breach

The Sri Lankan Navy has detained 14 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, accusing them of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and entering Sri Lankan waters. The fishermen set out from Tharangambadi in the Mayiladuthurai district on Saturday aboard a mechanized vessel. Reports indicate that a mechanical problem developed mid-journey, causing their boat to drift unintentionally into areas near Point Pedro, within Sri Lankan jurisdiction. Naval patrols from Sri Lanka intercepted the fishing boat early Monday morning, leading to the arrest of the 14 individuals and the confiscation of their vessel. The fishermen have been taken to the Kankesanthurai Naval Base for investigation. Representatives from fishermen’s associations have expressed deep concern, stating that the boundary crossing was not deliberate but a consequence of equipment failure. They are appealing to the Indian government to engage in diplomatic talks with Sri Lanka to secure the swift release of the fishermen. These repeated arrests underscore the ongoing complexities of maritime boundary issues in the Palk Strait and the persistent need for diplomatic resolutions. The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department has already informed the Indian High Commission in Colombo about the incident, and efforts are underway to coordinate their release.
