Despite existing tariff disagreements, the next US ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, expressed optimism regarding the potential for a trade deal between the US and India. Gor stated that the Trump administration is focused on persuading India to stop purchasing Russian oil. He said that the two nations are not significantly distant in their negotiations about tariffs. “We are not very far apart on an agreement on these tariffs,” Gor said. “Getting India to stop buying Russian oil is the top priority of this administration.” Gor anticipates a positive agreement, with current discussions focused on the details. He predicted that the situation would likely be resolved in the near future. Gor characterized India as a strategic partner, underscoring its significance in regional stability, economic growth, and mutual security interests. Gor also acknowledged the strong relationship between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi. Gor currently serves as the Director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel and was nominated by President Trump in August to become the next US ambassador to India. The US Senate has yet to confirm his appointment. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, introducing Gor, noted the exceptional US-India ties, stating that the relationship is “one of the best relationships in the world.”.
