Former President Donald Trump has initiated a legal effort to have the Supreme Court review his executive order concerning birthright citizenship. This move aims to change the current policy of automatically granting citizenship to individuals born within the United States. In the appeal, Trump’s legal team argued that the prevailing concept of birthright citizenship is misguided and has led to negative outcomes. The Justice Department filed appeals in response to lower court decisions that had previously invalidated Trump’s executive order. The core of the executive order, enacted on Trump’s first day in office, was to prevent the automatic awarding of citizenship to children born in the U.S. if neither parent was a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident. This stance is seen as a direct challenge to the 14th Amendment, which defines U.S. citizenship. The administration is requesting the Supreme Court to hear the case during its upcoming term starting October 6.
