A US trade advisor has publicly accused India of enabling Russia’s war in Ukraine by buying cheap Russian oil, processing it, and then selling the refined products. This, the advisor contends, helps Russia finance its military activities. The advisor also criticized India’s strengthening ties with China. Despite the criticism, the advisor acknowledged the importance of India’s leadership. These comments come after a former US Ambassador to the United Nations emphasized the value of a strong US-India relationship to counteract China’s influence. Furthermore, a leading economist has criticized the US administration for imposing tariffs on Indian goods, calling the move detrimental. These tariffs were implemented due to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, a decision that has also drawn criticism from Russian officials. India’s External Affairs Minister has defended the nation’s actions, stating that the US itself requested India to help stabilize global energy markets by purchasing Russian oil.
