US Vice President JD Vance has shared a personal hope that his wife, Usha, who practices Hinduism, might one day convert to Christianity. Vance articulated his belief in the Christian gospel and expressed a desire for his wife to experience the same spiritual conviction. He was clear, however, that this is a hope, not an expectation, and that he fully respects her individual autonomy and the concept of free will. Vance’s comments were made in response to a question about interfaith relationships during a public event. He elaborated on how he and Usha navigate their different religious backgrounds, emphasizing open discussion and a joint decision to raise their children within the Christian faith. Vance advised that communication and family consensus are key to managing religious differences effectively. He also provided insight into his own spiritual past, mentioning that he was agnostic or atheist when he first met Usha at Yale University, and he believes she shared a similar stance then. While Usha comes from a Hindu heritage, Vance characterized her upbringing as not being strongly religious. Vance’s personal spiritual trajectory has seen him return to his Protestant upbringing and later convert to Catholicism, a faith he now deeply cherishes.
