Following a youth movement in Nepal, Sushila Karki, a former Chief Justice, has been appointed as interim Prime Minister. Her political journey started in Varanasi, where she studied. Karki is an alumna of BHU, having earned an MA in Political Science there in 1975. Professor Deepak Malik, who knew Karki, states that Varanasi was a key center for the anti-monarchy movement in Nepal. BP Koirala, from 1940 to 1980, strategized against the monarchy from Varanasi. Key figures such as GP Koirala, Shailaja Acharya, and Durga Prasad Subedi, who were Nepali Congress youth leaders, played a vital role in the anti-monarchy movement.
