Karki is an alumna of BHU, having earned an MA in Political Science there in 1975. Professor Deepak Malik, who knew Karki, states that Varanasi was a key center for the anti-monarchy movement in Nepal. BP Koirala, from 1940 to 1980, strategized against the monarchy from Varanasi.
