The political situation in Pakistan is currently defined by the growing influence of General Asim Munir. Munir’s recent promotion to Field Marshal by the Shehbaz government has led to speculation about his potential candidacy for president, creating uncertainty for incumbent President Asif Ali Zardari.
Zardari has reacted by appointing Murtaza Solangi, a veteran journalist and former interim information minister, as his spokesperson. This move is interpreted as a signal that Zardari feels vulnerable and is taking steps to secure his position.
Solangi announced his new role on X, saying, “A small personal news, I have been appointed as the spokesperson to the President of Pakistan. I will assume my new responsibilities from tomorrow. Thank you.”
Historically, the military in Pakistan has often intervened in politics. However, the Shehbaz government seems to be employing a different strategy, possibly offering Asim Munir the presidency to maintain stability.
Actions taken by the Shehbaz Sharif government, including elevating Asim Munir to Field Marshal and facilitating his meeting with Trump, demonstrate a strategic approach. The expanding power of Asim Munir is viewed as a significant challenge for Asif Ali Zardari.
Zardari’s choice of a spokesperson is aimed at strengthening his communication with the public and ensuring effective messaging during crises. Solangi formerly managed over 3,000 employees within 64 broadcasting units at Radio Pakistan (2008-2013). He was also instrumental in developing relationships with international broadcasters such as Voice of America, China Radio International, and Deutsche Welle.
Solangi also made history by becoming the first Pakistani to be elected as the Vice President and later the Acting President of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. In 2011, he received the Sitara-e-Imtiaz from the President of Pakistan in recognition of his media and public service contributions.
