President Donald Trump has stated that the United States-China relationship is “extremely strong” following a telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The call addressed a spectrum of significant topics, including the conflict in Ukraine, bilateral trade agreements, and the sensitive matter of Taiwan’s political status.

Trump expressed his satisfaction with the dialogue on social media, noting a beneficial trade outcome for American farmers and reaffirming his optimistic outlook on the US-China partnership. He described the deal as “very important” for the agricultural sector.

During the call, Xi Jinping reiterated China’s position that Taiwan’s integration with the mainland is an indispensable part of the post-war global framework, as reported by the Chinese foreign ministry. This exchange comes at a time when regional security is a growing concern, especially following comments from Japan about potential intervention if China were to threaten Taiwan. Beijing has reacted sharply to such remarks, further complicating its relationship with Japan.

Xi also reportedly emphasized the historical cooperation between China and the US during World War II and urged the two nations to jointly protect the victory achieved during that conflict. The US maintains its opposition to any forceful change in Taiwan’s status and is legally bound to supply the island with defensive military hardware. Trump’s administration had previously approved a substantial arms sale to Taiwan, which China viewed as a contravention of the one-China principle.

The conversation included trade discussions, though concrete outcomes regarding agricultural imports or other trade matters were not specified. According to Chinese sources, Xi perceived the bilateral relationship as maintaining a stable and positive momentum and expressed a desire for further positive developments. The leaders also touched upon the Ukraine crisis, with Xi advocating for a resolution that addresses the conflict’s fundamental causes.
