The 2026 Xiamen Marathon ignited passions on January 11 in China’s dynamic southeastern hub, where Ethiopian stars seized control of both elite fields. As the year’s kickoff World Athletics Platinum Label race, it hosted 35,000 runners navigating a refreshed 42-kilometer path blending ocean views and city energy.

Men’s winner Dawit Wolde clocked an impressive 2 hours, 9 minutes, 18 seconds, fending off challengers to lead an all-Ethiopian top three. This sweep showcased tactical brilliance and superior training regimens that have made the East African nation synonymous with distance running excellence.

Ruti Aga, in the women’s race, retained her crown with a commanding 2:22:45, her teammates securing silver and bronze in a flawless team effort. The result cements Ethiopia’s stronghold in marathons worldwide.

Reflecting on the victory, Wolde appreciated the course tweaks. ‘The changes make it even better, and I’ve achieved something special here in Xiamen, a city I love,’ he enthused. China’s Yang Shaohui, best of the locals at 2:11:14, viewed the event as a golden chance to test himself against legends. ‘It’s a top-tier race with renowned athletes – a priceless experience,’ he said.

Beyond the elites, the mass participation underscored the marathon’s inclusivity, from novices to pros. Its platinum designation guarantees rigorous standards, drawing top talent and fostering a festive atmosphere. This edition’s outcomes preview a competitive year ahead, with Ethiopia’s athletes poised for more glory amid emerging global threats.
