Change is in the air for the Indian cricket team, especially concerning leadership. Following the change in Test captaincy, the reins of the ODI format have also been handed over to a new leader. Shubman Gill, an experienced batter, is now captaining India in both Test and ODI formats. While Gill has been given this role, the ambition to lead is shared by many players in the Indian team, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is preparing himself for a potential captaincy role.

Jaiswal made his international debut just two years ago, and he has quickly become a fixture in the team. He is a crucial member of the Indian Test team and is a regular in the playing eleven. There’s a growing call for him to be a consistent part of the ODI and T20 teams, which he is well-equipped for. However, this young batsman has set his sights even higher.

In a recent YouTube podcast, 23-year-old Jaiswal shared his ambitions and the steps he’s taking to achieve them. Speaking with Raj Shamani, the left-handed opener stated, “I am working on myself every day to emerge as a leader. I want to be a captain one day.” While Jaiswal didn’t specify which team he wishes to lead, his ultimate goal is clear. Additionally, he expressed his desire to captain in the IPL.

This isn’t the first time the young Indian cricketer has shown his interest in captaincy. A few months ago, Jaiswal left the Mumbai Cricket Association and joined Goa Cricket, where plans were made to appoint him as captain. However, he ultimately reversed his decision.

Moreover, there were reports of a potential leadership struggle within the Rajasthan Royals during the IPL 2025 season. It later emerged that some within the franchise favored Jaiswal as captain, but Riyan Parag was chosen instead. There were rumors of Jaiswal’s dissatisfaction during that period. It is evident that Yashasvi has ambitious goals, and his dedication suggests he is determined to achieve them.
