Yunus Pledges On-Time Elections to US Amidst Violence Concerns

Reaffirming Bangladesh’s democratic path, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has assured the United States that the general elections will take place on the scheduled date of February 12. During a telephone exchange with US Special Envoy Sergio Gor, Yunus addressed concerns about ongoing violence and attacks against minority communities, stating the government’s preparedness to manage the situation and ensure a peaceful electoral environment. He emphasized the public’s strong desire for free and fair voting following years of what he described as democratic suppression. The dialogue also included discussions on bilateral trade relations, with Yunus noting positive outcomes in tariff negotiations that resulted in lower US tariffs on Bangladeshi products. The recent death of activist Sharif Osman Hadi and the significant public mourning were also discussed. Yunus indicated that elements linked to the previous government are allegedly investing heavily to disrupt the election and that their leader is inciting unrest. He expressed hope that the upcoming polls will establish a new benchmark for Bangladesh’s democratic transition. Advisors on commerce, national security, and SDGs were present.
